Abstract:Background: The international education environment and supportive national policies facilitate postgraduate students’ international exchange opportunities. This study analyzes the internationalization of postgraduate medical students by examining the outward Chinese post-graduate students and international postgraduate students studying in China. Methods: The information of Chinese postgraduates and international postgraduates in the physiology department of Xuzhou medical university in China was collected for 6 years from 2015 to 2020. The proportion of Chinese outward postgraduate, grade distribution, funding, and outward reasons of Chinese postgraduates were analyzed; The ratio of international postgraduate students and financial support for international postgraduate students in recent six years were also calculated. The data were analyzed by MS Excel. Results: The outward mobility of Chinese postgraduate students has remained at 4% - 9.52% in the past six years. The majority of the external postgraduate students were in their second year of study (57.14%). The supporting fund for outward postgraduate students was mainly from the tutor project funds (33.33%) and self-financing (22.22%). The postgraduate students were more interested in academic visits (57.14%). International postgraduate student’s mobility was increased from 4.76% in 2015 to 24% in 2020. The primary financial support for international postgraduate students was from both themselves and university. Conclusion: The mobility of postgraduate students increased during the past years in general, but there are few problems which needs to be addressed. The proportion of Chinese outward postgraduate students remained unchanged in the past 6 years. In addition, the proportion of international postgraduate students has increased quickly, but financial support from the government is limited. We suggest that the funding and guarantee for both Chinese postgraduates and international postgraduates should be improved through the efforts of universities and government.
