The New German School and Its Program Music in the 19th Century

Abstract:The New German School and program music in the 19th century are two important propositions in music historiography, which are closely linked to the development of history. The New German School was the most important and strongest supporter and advocate to program music. The article starts from the historical background of the birth of the New German School, sorts out the historical facts in the literature, reveals the real reasons why the New German School was proposed, and gives an insight into the program music philosophy of the two founders of the New German School, Liszt and Brendel. The program music of this period advocated innovation and the spirit of breaking the inherent forms. More importantly, the program music makes its musical connotations more accessible to the public and helps to enrich the musical life of society.
