Abstract:The teaching of synonyms has always been a difficult point in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. By the
in-depth analysis on the subtle differences between the synonymous words “tiāo” and “xuǎn,” we find that the
matching function of the semantic framework can reveal the reason for the different collocation of synonymous
words. Under the circumstances of two synonymous words with the same surface meaning, we could find the
subtle differences hidden deep inside them by the prototype meaning. So the semantic framework and prototype
meaning are effective methods to interpret synonyms. In addition to three commonly used methods in cognitive
linguistics, the judgment of prototype meaning should also rely on the diachronic study of semantic evolution.
