Abstract:This study aims to improve Chinese teaching and learning efficiency of international medical students in
China. An empirical research on Chinese learning motivation, together with carefully designed questionnaire
and in-depth interview, has been conducted to develop several specific strategies. Overall, the motivation for
Chinese learning for the target group is measured at high level, due to factors such as HSK certificate, doctor-
patient communication and daily life, etc. Intensity of motivation related to medical specialty is higher than
integral level. Individual factors such as gender and mother tongue are motivational factors as well. Cultural
experience motivates female students more than male students; a group of male and south Asia is lack of
initiative as their external motivation is comparatively higher; motivation of textbook interests among African
students is weak. Relevant Chinese teaching strategies could be optimized from aspects as syllabus and
teaching materials, teaching methods, HSK(Chinese Proficiency Test), etc.
